Course Objective:

Upon the successful completion of the course, participants will be able to:-

· Have an in-depth understanding of water supply system security, vulnerability & terrorism including its history and threats

· Determine the microbiological contaminants and threats of concern with the water supply system and become familiar with vulnerability assessment & emergency response planning

· Describe the drinking water distribution systems such as the modeling contaminant transport, simulation of residential water demands and how to conduct a tracer study

· Analyze the various cyber threats and IT/SCADA system vulnerability by reviewing the utility’s computer system infrastructure and identifying the different types of vulnerability approach & planning tools

· Learn & employ the method of assessing the risks to drinking-water supplies from terrorists attacks taking into account the chemical & biological agents, source-water protection as well as designing an efficient hydrologic tracer-test

· Understand the methodologies for reliability analysis and Illustrate the process of developing an early warning system for drinking water security and safety

· Know the process of responding to a contamination threat in a drinking water network and recognize the potential for modeling and monitoring

· Learn & employ reconstructing historical contamination events and increase awareness on the source water early warning systems including framework, methodology, design & operation

· Increase knowledge on the security hardware & surveillance systems for water supply systems and be able to review its design & implementation considerations

· Become acquainted with the optimal location of isolation valves as well as its effect of valving on system reliability and be able to carry-out remote monitoring & network models including their potential for protecting water supplies

· Determine the role of hydraulic and water quality modeling for contamination response and be able to recognize the importance of optimal monitoring stations allocations for water distribution systems security

· Learn contingency planning for emergency water supply in non-conventional times including the birth of the atomic age, recent trends & future risks

· Review the development of the next generation microbiological and chemical detection capabilities for water supplies
