Course Description 

The course outlines the general technology of pumps and compressors Design. It covers how these machines work on process, mechanical aspects, wear, lubrication and troubleshooting by vibration analysis and other techniques. The course provides participants with the basic knowledge for inspecting pumps and compressors, and making fault detection and diagnoses.

Course Objective:

Extensive use is made of case study material to underline the key aspects of the course and to give the delegates exposure to current best practice. 

Course Certificate:

Masters Consultant certificate will be issued to all attendees completing minimum of 75% of the total tuition hours of the course.

Course Outline:
 
Module1: TECHNOLOGY OF PUMPS

- Parts of the machine: casing, rotor, bearing, coupling.

- Auxiliaries: heating, cooling, lubrication.

- Maintenance: strip-down, assembly, inspection, clearance, adjustment.

- Video: Basic Pump Types and Technology.

- Summary of Thermodynamic Concepts involving Entropy.

 Module 2: TECHNOLOGY OF COMPRESSORS:

- Minimizing Compressor Work. Polytrophic processes. Multi-stage compression with Inter-cooling. Isentropic efficiency of turbines. Isentropic efficiency of compressors and pumps

- Reciprocating and rotating machines.

- Parts of the machine: casing, rotor, piston, bearings, couplings.

- Auxiliaries: heating, cooling, lubrication.

- Maintenance: strip-down, assembly, inspection, clearance, adjustment.

- Axial Flow Compressor: Velocity triangles. Torque calculation and torque coefficient. Power calculation and power coefficient.

Module 3: OPERATION & PERFORMANCE

- Process aspects

- Operating parameters; head, flow, rpm, efficiency.

- Characteristic curves.

- Effect of wear.

- Mechanical issues.

- Video: Fundamentals of Pump Performance 

- Design Aspects of Turbo machines: Linear cascades. Linear cascade with drag. Linear cascade results. Radial cascades. Three- dimensional aspects of axial- flow machines. Elementary design considerations. Cavitations.

 Module 4: DETERIORATION

- Forces created by the pressure, by inertia, by friction: effects on bearings and internal parts.

- Defects and typical failures of valves, piston rings and packing rings, piston rod.

- Dismantling and mounting procedures.

Module 5: LUBRICATION AND BEARING PROBLEMS

- Purpose, different types of oil and grease.

- Anti-friction bearings: types, lifetime, mounting, applications, related problems.

- Plain and pad bearings, thrust bearings: operation, maintenance, incidents.

 Module 6: COUPLINGS & MISALIGNMENT

- Different types of couplings, related problems

 Different methods of alignment.

 Module 7: SEALS
 
 Module 8: ROTORS AND SHAFTS
 
 Module 9: LUBRICANT MONITORING
