PhD BioTechnology

Overview: 

This is a full-time program and students are welcome for admission throughout the year. This program includes laboratory training and a rigorous core course requirement, seminar attendace, successful completion of a comprehensive exam, presentations (oral) and of course defense of a dissertation that describes the original research.

Admission: 

Following conditions need to be met for admissions in Biotechnlogy PhD degree:

- The candidate will first apply to MU, Dubai and register for the PhD program after paying the application fee (AED 100) and registration fee (AED 2000)

- SAP will generate the student identification number

- The School of Life Sciences, MU, Dubai will form a Doctoral Advisory committee (DAC) for each candidate as per MU rules and regulations

- The candidate shall present the research proposal to the DAC.

- If the proposal involves the use of animals or human subject / materials, proper ethical approval shall be submitted along with the application

- If the proposal involves the use of transgenic/recombinant DNA technology, Institutional bio-safety committee approval will be submitted.

- The DAC recommendation along with the candidate’s application shall be sent to: The Deputy Registrar, Manipal University, 3rd Floor, Manipal.edu, Madhav Nagar, Manipal 576104, India.

- The candidate will be called upon to present the research proposal to the PhD committee in India and Guide or co –Guide will present during the presentation.

- The candidate will be finally registered after getting MU-PhD committee approval.

- The date of the presentation will be the date of registration.

- After receiving the registration, candidates will then pay the PhD registration fee at Manipal University, India and laboratory fee to the MU, Dubai.

Theory Coursework: The candidate needs to take at least 2 subjects (8-12 credits) as per recommendation of Doctoral Advisory Committee during his/her first year.

Eligibility: 

The pre-requisites for this program include a master's degree with minimum  60% marks or a CGPA of 2.75 in any of the following fields from a recognized university: 

- Biotechnology

- Life Sciences

- Biological Sciences

- Microbiology

- Pharmacology

- Molecular Biology

- Biochemistry

- Plant Biology

Research Progress Report:

- Participant needs to submit research progress report of DAC committee every six-month

- The DAC will arrange for the presentation of the same in consultation with the Head of the  Department and Guide. 

- Participant will submit progress report to DAC on the prescribed date

- The DAC will forward its recommendation/suggestions to Deputy Registrar.

Cancellation of Registration: 

Ph.D. registration is subjected to be canceled if the following scenarios are met: 

- Upon DAC recommendation, the candidate is observed to show lack of progress as required and directed by the supervisor also after given due opportunities to the candidate for defending his/her case. 

- Candidate failed to submit the thesis before the maximum stipulated period.

Synopsis Submission: 

- The DAC may approve the synopsis submitted by analysing the contribution of the research in  the form of visible outputs like publications, patents, etc. or suggest modifications. 

- The copy of the DAC recommendations will be sent to the Deputy Registrar  (technical/Academics) and to the Registrar (Evaluation) 

- The candidate will submit 5 hard copies (with soft binding) and one soft copy in MS Word 

Thesis Submission: 

- Each candidate for the award of degree of Doctor of Philosophy will submit six (6) copies of  his/her thesis not earlier than the prescribed minimum period and not later than the prescribed maximum period. 

- The thesis shall not be published without the approval of the University

Thesis Examination: 

- The Guide in consultation with the Doctoral Advisory Committee will submit a panel of  examiners, along with their brief CVs and list of publications, at least six months before the  expected date of submission of the thesis. 

- The panel will include 6 examiners (3 from UAE and 3 from abroad).

- A board of three examiners will be appointed by the registrar (Evaluation) for assessment of the  thesis. One of them will be the Guide of the candidate, who shall act as coordinator. 

- The examiners will submit a detailed critique on the thesis along with clarifications.

- After the thesis has been approved by the external and internal examiners, a public defense of  the thesis will be held, as well as the viva voce examination to adjudge the general proficiency of the candidate’s field of work. 

- If the thesis is rejected by more than one examiner; it will stand rejected and shall not be  referred to any other examiner. 

- In the event that the thesis is rejected by only one examiner, it will be referred, to another examiner from the approved panel. In case the thesis is approved by this examiner, it will be considered as unanimously approved. 

- If one or more examiners recommend re-submission of the thesis after modification, it shall be  done within a maximum period of six months from the date on which the candidate is so  informed by the University. 

- The candidate will be entitled to appear at the defense of thesis and viva voce examination only  if the thesis is unanimously approved by the Board of Examiners. 

- If the report from any one of external examiners is not received within four months a copy of  the thesis will be sent to another examiner from amongst the approved panel. 

- The board of examiners for the viva voce examination shall consist of one external and one  internal examiner. Ordinarily, the Guide or one of the Co- Guide (s) of the thesis will be the internal examiner. 

- The topic, date and the time of the defense of thesis shall be announced by the University well  in advance so that the faculty member and other interested in the topic of the thesis can be present. 

- The candidate will give a open presentation to all (which may include all students and faculty  members of the Department of Biotechnology, MUD) to defend his thesis. 

- The board of examiners shall take into consideration the view and criticism, if any, of the faculty  members and other participating in the public defense of thesis. 

- However, the result of the examination shall be decided solely by the board of examiners.

Award of PhD Degree: 

- The candidate will be declared eligible for the award of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, only  on the unanimous recommendations of the members of the board of examiners after the viva voce examination. 

- In case the examiners are not satisfied with the performance of the candidate in the above  examinations, the candidate shall be required to reappear for another viva voce examination  after a period of two month provided such specific recommendation is made by the board of  examiners. 

- Manipal University India will award the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree to the successful  candidates
