Course Details

1. Regulations & Compliance

  • Follows OSHA 29 CFR 1926.1400 and ASME B30.5 standards for mobile cranes.

  • Operators must be certified to meet safety standards and regulations.

2. Crane Types & Components

  • Truck-Mounted Cranes (Wheeled, mobile on roads)

  • Rough Terrain Cranes (Off-road use, larger tires for uneven ground)

  • Crawler Cranes (Track-based, stable for heavy lifting)

  • Boom, Jib, and Counterweights (Essential parts for safe load handling)

3. Pre-Use Inspection

  • Inspect crane structure, tires, tracks, and hydraulic systems.

  • Check load charts, counterweights, and hook integrity.

  • Verify brakes, lights, controls, and safety features.

  • Ensure proper ground conditions for crane stability.

4. Safe Operating Procedures

  • Know the Load Capacity: Ensure the crane is within its weight limits by consulting the load chart.

  • Use Outriggers: Extend outriggers fully for proper crane stability.

  • Test Lift: Always perform a test lift before lifting a load.

  • Smooth Movements: Use slow and steady crane movements to avoid swing and load shifts.

5. Common Hazards & Prevention

  • Tip-Overs: Always use outriggers and ensure the ground is level and stable.

  • Falling Loads: Verify proper rigging and secure the load before lifting.

  • Power Line Contact: Maintain at least 10 feet of clearance from electrical lines.

  • Swinging Loads: Avoid standing underneath loads and keep clear of the lifting radius.

6. Emergency Procedures

  • Mechanical Failure: Stop operation immediately and report to maintenance.

  • Load Drop: Evacuate the area and ensure the load is re-rigged before retrying.

  • Accidents: Know first-aid procedures and emergency contact protocols.

7. Certification & Refresher Training

  • Initial Certification: Involves classroom training, hands-on evaluation, and safety tests.

  • Refresher Training: Required every 3-5 years or after safety incidents to maintain certification.
