As per NFPA, in the U.S., an average of 22 civilian deaths, 171 civilian injuries, and $484 million in property damage is incurred per year from hot work. Hot work includes cutting, welding, brazing, soldering, grinding, drilling, chipping, blasting, heat-treating, thawing pipes, roof application, or making repairs with tar pots and kettles.

An important fire prevention safety precaution is to assign a fire watch person or personnel during and after tasks that involve potential heat or ignition sources, also known as hot work. Fire watch can help workers prevent fires that could lead to property damage, serious injuries, or worse.

  • Identify the component of Fire Triangle.
  • Recognize the different hazards and risk associated with different types of hot work activity.
  • Understand who is a fire watch personnel and their roles and responsibilities.
  • Identify different best practices to control and mitigate risk associated with hot works.
