Description

Process Safety at a facility is mainly influenced by: Employing appropriate technology in design and construction; Anticipating the effects of external circumstances; Understanding and dealing with human behavior; Getting high reporting of near misses to learn from incidents; Having effective management systems; The effectiveness of all these efforts depends on a successful hazard evaluation program, i.e. on a proper PHA utilization within the scope of an exact defined PSM (Process Safety Management) system. A Thorough PHA Comprises of two separate and distinct steps: Process Hazard Identification; Evaluating whether existing or proposed safeguards are adequate to control the identified process hazards, i.e. Process Hazard Evaluation; This course covers the explanation/the importance of PSM and PHA. Different “process hazard identification methods (e.g. HAZID)” and “process hazard evaluation” methodologies are presented and discussed thoroughly. As one of the most optimized process hazard evaluation techniques for the process industry HAZOP (HAzard and OPerability) technique is described, discussed and trained.

Objectives

This course shall provide the participant with deep understanding on what a PSM system does mean, why there is a need for a PSM system, the meaning of PHA and its role in a PSM. Taking into account the importance of HAZOP studies to avoid major accidents in process industry, the course aims specifically at providing proper answers to: “What is HAZOP?”, : “Why HAZOP?”, “How to implement HAZOP?” and When?”, “How to lead a HAZOP study?” and finally “how to close-out a HAZOP review?”. Upon gaining the above mentioned understanding concerning PHA and HAZOP and after passing the associated exams at the end of the course, the course participants would be eligible to act as a HAZOP lead in performing HAZOP studies and give effective support during the whole PHA process.

Who Should Attend

Those who are involved in the management, engineering (design, process, chemical, facilities, instrumentation and controls), operations and safety of process operations. Engineers, safety/environment personnel, plant operators, area managers and maintenance personnel will benefit from the practical approach presented in this course.
